Britney Spears’s conservatorship has reportedly been extended until September 2021.
For 12 years Spears has been under her conservatorship, which is put in place when a court-appointed guardian – in this case her father Jamie – manages another person’s life due to physical or mental limitations.
The arrangement reached a boiling point in November after Britney’s lawyer Sam Ingham told the court that the singer was “afraid” of Jamie and would not perform again while he remained her conservator.
A court was expected to review Jamie’s handling of Britney’s assets during a virtual hearing on Wednesday (16 December), however Entertainment Tonight reports that Jamie, Britney’s mother Lynne and Ingham decided to continue discussions next year.
This will see the conservatorship extended once again until 3 September 2021. It had previously been set to run until February 2021.
The Independent has contacted Britney’s representatives for comment.
Earlier this week, Jamie defended himself from critics who claimed he was exploiting his daughter.
He claimed that he’d only ever been trying to protect Britney from “those with self-serving interests” and had been on “good terms” with her until her lawyer filed to remove him from the conservatorship.
In November, Britney’s mother Lynne Spears said through her attorney that she agreed with her daughter's decision to have Jamie removed as conservator.
