Britney Spears Hits Back At ‘Gaslighting’ Ex Kevin Federline Over Alarming Memoir Claims

Britney Spears has hit back at her ex-husband Kevin Federline over comments he made about her in his upcoming memoir You Thought You Knew.

ICYMI, excerpts from the book — which traces Federline’s dancing career, marriage to Spears and the fallout from their divorce in 2007 — were published in The New York Times earlier this week.

Among other comments, Federline wrote of his concerns about Spears’ relationship with their two sons, Jayden and Sean, recalling how they were once allegedly afraid to stay at Spears’ home because she would watch them sleep “silently in the doorway … with a knife in her hand”.

“This situation with Britney feels like it’s racing toward something irreversible … It’s become impossible to pretend everything’s OK,” Federline wrote in the excerpts.

Now, Spears has addressed the claims in a social media post, saying they are “extremely hurtful and exhausting”.

In a lengthy message shared to Instagram on Thursday, the pop star described Federline’s claims as “gaslighting” while sharing her own perspective on her relationship with her sons, who have been the subject of a years-long custody battle between Spears and Federline.

“I have always pleaded and screamed to have a life with my boys. Relationships with teenage boys [are] complex. I have felt demoralised by this situation and have always asked and almost begged for them to be a part of my life,” Spears wrote.

The singer claimed Jayden and Sean had only ever “witnessed the lack of respect shown by [their] own father for me” before revealing she had only scarcely seen her sons in the years since her divorce.

“With one son only seeing me for 45 min in the past 5 years and the other with only 4 visits in the past 5 years. I have pride too,” Spears wrote.

She then promised to “let [her kids] know when I am available”.

“Those white lies in that book, they are going straight to the bank and I am the only one who genuinely gets hurt here… If you really know me, you won’t pay attention to the tabloids of my mental health and drinking.

“I speak on this because I have had enough and any real woman would do the same,” Spears concluded.

It marks Spears’ most direct response to Federline’s memoir, with a rep for the singer telling NYT earlier this week that “he and others are profiting off [Spears] and sadly it comes after child support has ended with Kevin”.

Federline, meanwhile, said in the accompanying NYT interview that he hasn’t spoken to Spears “in years” but has “never, ever, once, been against Britney”.

“I’ve only tried to help my sons have an incredible relationship with their mother,” Federline claimed.

In her own memoir, 2023’s The Woman in Me, Spears reflected on being “so in love” with Federline on her wedding day and admitted to “want[ing] babies with this man”.

Spears’ memoir is set to be adapted into a musical biopic, with Wicked’s Jon M. Chu on board as the director.

Federline’s memoir You Thought You Knew hits shelves on October 21.
