Britney Spears freed from conservatorship after 13 years

Britney Spears has been released from her conservatorship after 13 years.

The pop star, 39, has been under the tight control of her father and co-conservators since 2008.

In recent months and years, she had been involved in a long and difficult fight in court as she tried to regain control of her life.

On Friday, (November 12) Judge Brenda Penny ruled the conservatorship should come to an end, the Mirror reports.

It comes after Britney's lawyer Mathew Rosengart asked the judge to end the conservatorship without a medical evaluation.

She told the court: "The conservatorship of the person and the estate of Britney Jean Spears is hereby terminated."

Britney is now able to make her own medical, financial and personal decisions for the first time since 2008.

Prior to the announcement, the court has warned that social media was being monitored and that if anyone posted or tweeted updates and that the entire viewing gallery would be kicked out of the courtroom.

In the run-up to Friday’s hearing, Judge Penny didn’t give any signals as to what she would decide, but after no significant opposition from anyone involved in the legal arrangement, she opted to terminate the conservatorship.

The mother-of-two, who got engaged to Sam Asghari in September, now faces the lengthy prospect of being handed back control over her life and finances.

Fans gathered outside the Los Angeles courtroom on Friday to show their support for the singer, and celebrated as the judge ended the conservatorship that has placed severe restrictions on Britney’s life.

They blocked off the street in front of the courthouse as they staged a demonstration before the hearing, and kicked off a ‘Freedom Party’ after the news broke of the judge’s decision.

It was the star’s fans who began the #FreeBritney movement on social media back in 2019, and it gathered pace over the last year as the singer began to fight for her right to live her own life.

Her case gathered pace when she was permitted to hire her own attorney, Matthew Rosengart, and he successfully persuaded the judge to suspend Jamie from his role in the conservatorship in September.

At the time, Judge Penny said she found no evidence of wrongdoing against the singer’s father, but had been forced to make her decision because of the “toxic environment”.
