Britney Spears' father Jamie suspended from superstar's conservatorship

The father of Britney Spears has been suspended from the global superstar's conservatorship, a US judge ruled.

According to the Mirror, Judge Brenda Penny told Jamie, 69, that continuing to manage his 39-year-old daughter's estate was "untenable" at a Los Angeles Superior Court hearing on Wednesday.

He was required to hand over the relevant documents to certified public accountant John Zabel, who has been named as temporary conservator of the Baby One More Time singer's estate, worth £45 million ($60 million).

Jamie's legal team has spoken out against his suspension, maintaining that a termination of the arrangement is the appropriate action instead.

The judge agreed with Britney's lawyer that it was in the star's "best interests" that her father be removed.

The court was told Jamie's continued involvement in his daughter's 13-year conservatorship was "toxic".

The move marks a huge milestone for the superstar in her efforts to be free of the legal arrangement that has been in place since 2008.

It's likely that the judge's decision will be widely celebrated by members of the #FreeBritney movement, a group of supporters across the globe who have long been calling for the conservatorship to come to an end.

A group of fans had gathered outside the court and erupted in cheers as the judge's ruling was conveyed.

One keen follower throughout the case has been Britney's new fiance Sam Asghari.

The 27-year-old actor quickly made his feelings known following the announcement as he took to his Instagram Stories to write: "FREE BRITNEY! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!"

Following months of fast-paced developments in what was once a very slow-moving case, the judge has now set a date of November 12 on whether the conservatorship will be terminated.

Dad Jamie had already stepped down from the role of overseeing his daughter's personal affairs in 2019.

Dad Jamie had already stepped down from the role of overseeing his daughter's personal affairs in 2019.

His lawyer, Vivian Thoreen, argued Mr Zabel, a certified public accountant, was unqualified.

She made reference to the accountant's alleged failed business deal in which he is said to have lost "one million of his own money in a fraudulent real estate project".

Jamie once again made it clear that he hoped the conservatorship would be terminated.
