Britney Spears’ father claims he had no idea about — or power over — the pop star’s allegations of abuse under her conservatorship.
“Mr. Spears is simply not involved in any decisions related to Ms. Spears’s personal care or medical or reproductive issues,” James Spears’ lawyers wrote in documents filed late Tuesday night. “Mr. Spears is unable to hear and address his daughter’s concerns directly because he has been cut off from communicating with her.”
While Spears controls his daughter’s finances, he claims that he had no oversight over the more personal aspects, which was left up to Jodi Montgomery, who took over as her personal conservator in September 2019.
In jaw-dropping testimony last week, the “Toxic” singer broke a 13-year silence about her conservatorship, saying she felt “enslaved.”
“I thought if just maybe I said that enough, I might become happy. I’ve been in denial. I’ve been in shock. I am traumatized,” she told Judge Penny.
“But now I’m telling you the truth, OK. I’m not happy, I can’t sleep. I’m so angry it’s insane. And I’m depressed. I cry every day.”
Among the most shocking allegations was that Spears is not allowed to take out her IUD, despite wanting to have another baby.
She also said her dad ignored her fears about lithium and instead sent her to a $60,000 rehab program in Beverly Hills, California.
“He was the one who approved all of it,” Spears said. “I cried on the phone for an hour, and he loved every minute of it. ... He loved the control to hurt his own daughter.”
James Spears called on the courts to investigate Britney’s “serious allegations regarding forced labor, forced medical treatment and therapy, improper medical care, and limitations on personal rights.”
“Given the nature of the allegations and claims, it is critical that that the court confirm whether or not Ms. Spears’ testimony was accurate in order to determine what corrective actions, if any, need to be taken,” the documents said.
