Britney Spears' dad hits back at critics of conservatorship and says it's to protect her

Britney Spears' dad has issued a stern defence of his daughter's conservatorship.

In recent months, many of Britney's fans have been demanding she be given her freedom back after more than a decade under the system.

The issue was thrust into the limelight by the release of New York Times documentary, Framing Britney Spears.

The documentary explores the legalities of a conservatorship and explains how Britney's father, Jamie, came to be in control of her finances as well as her everyday life.

It also follows the way Britney - one of the world's biggest stars - was portrayed by much of the media.

Now Jamie has voiced rebuttal to US politicians Matt Gaetz and Jim Jordan - who branded Jamie's motives "questionable" in a letter obtained by TMZ - insisting that it only works to protect Britney.

Jamie's attorney, Vivian Thoreen, says that since the conservatorship began, it had included reviews and expert opinion, and has acted as a system of checks and balances with annual accountings.

She goes on to claim that Britney and her own legal team have been a part of the decisions involving the conservatorship over the years.

Vivian adds: "Britney's Conservatorship of the Estate was co-managed by a private professional fiduciary and her father until early 2019.

"At that time, Britney requested in court papers that her father be the sole conservator of her estate.

"Her Conservatorship of the Person is not managed by her father but by a private professional fiduciary."

Of the claims made about Jamie's allegedly "questionable" motives, she continues: "Jamie Spears has diligently and professionally carried out his duties as one of Britney's conservators, and his love for his daughter and dedication to protecting her is clearly apparent to the court."

Among them have been Miley Cyrus, Sam Smith, Elli Goulding, Hayley Williams and Sarah Jessica Parker.

The Mirror has contacted Britney's reps for further comment and/or guidance.
