Britney Spears conservatorship: Lawyer to make fresh bid to remove singer’s father from conservatorship

Britney Spears’s lawyer plans to file a petition to make the singer’s current “care manager” and temporary conservator, Jodi Montgomery, a permanent one, according to reports.

Fox News reported that Spears’s court-appointed attorney, Samuel D Ingham III, laid out plans during a brief court hearing on Wednesday (17 March).

Spears’s father Jamie withdrew from his role as the star’s personal conservator in 2019 due to health issues and was temporarily replaced by Montgomery, a professional conservator.

The petition, which will be addressed on 27 April, will request to have Montgomery appointed as the permanent conservator of Spears’s person. It is unclear if she would also become the conservator of her estate, which is overseen by Jamie and The Bessemer Trust.

David Glass, a certified family law attorney who is not involved in the case, told Fox News: "A lot of the hubbub around this has been, ‘How come Britney hasn’t asked to have the conservator removed?’ This might be the first step towards that, at least moving to a personal conservator who she thinks will be more friendly to her, more favourable to her."

BBC Two is set to produce a documentary about Britney Spears and the ongoing legal battle surrounding her conservatorship.

The programme is being made by Bafta-winning journalist Mobeen Azhar, and arrives amid renewed interest in the #FreeBritney movement.

Earlier this year, the New York Times-produced documentary Framing Britney Spears covered similar subject matter, shining a light on the popstar’s life and treatment by the media.

Last month, Jamie responded to the Free Britney movement, sharing his side of the story via his attorney Vivian Thoreen, who said: “I understand that every story wants to have a villain, but people have it so wrong here.

“This is a story about a fiercely loyal, loving, and dedicated father who rescued his daughter from a life-threatening situation. People were harming her and they were exploiting her. Jamie saved Britney’s life.”
