Britney Spears able to end conservatorship at ‘any time’ but has chosen not to, father’s lawyer claims

Britney Spears has been able to terminate her conservatorship at “any time” during its 13 years but has chosen not to, her father’s lawyer has claimed.

Interest in the “Toxic” singer’s legal battle was reignited in February following the release of the Framing Britney Spears documentary.

The documentary detailed Spears’s legal guardianship, which has been in place since 2008 and is overseen by her father Jamie Spears, and the #FreeBritney campaign calling for it to end.

Speaking to People, Jamie’s lawyer Vivian L Thoreen said that Spears has “always” been able to end the current system if she so wanted.

Thoreen claimed that Jamie had “diligently and professionally carried out his duties as one of Britney’s conservators, and his love for his daughter and dedication to protecting her is clearly apparent to the court”.

“Any time Britney wants to end her conservatorship, she can ask her lawyer to file a petition to terminate it; she has always had this right but in 13 years has never exercised it,” she alleged.

While Britney has sought to have her father removed from her conservatorship, it is unclear how the legal agreement will work moving forward.

The singer’s lawyers have previously said that the conservatorship is “voluntary” and that Britney wants to keep her legal guardianship in place and instead choose who oversees her estate.

Earlier this month, Jamie said that he “would love nothing more than to see Britney not need a conservatorship”.

The Independent has contacted Britney’s representatives for comment.
