British yachties fired on by Russian warship say they were ‘blameless’

  • British couple Jane and Alan Kelvey say that their yacht, Bright Future, received warning shots from a Russian warship in the English Channel off the Isle of Wight.
  • The Kelveys described the incident as “scary” and vehemently denied Russian claims that their vessel was on a “dangerous approach” towards the frigate Admiral Grigorovich, calling them “lies”.
  • They said that the Russian warship fired warning shots after giving two sets of five horn blasts, but denied any prior flares or radio contact from the frigate.
  • The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed the “isolated incident”, with HMS Mersey monitoring the Russian frigate and HMS Tyne sending a seaboat to check on the yacht's crew.
  • The event followed the boarding of a sanctioned Russian tanker in the Channel, prompting concerns from the Conservative party about Russia's direct threat to the UK.
