A British woman who was raped while on holiday in Crete has claimed Greek police have wrongly charged her father with the attack.

The 33-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, claimed her father was in her hotel at the time of the attack and said her attacker had been allowed to “roam free”.

The woman’s father, 62, was arrested on Saturday, two days after his daughter filed a police report.

She told MailOnline: “I can tell you 100 per cent that he did not rape me. I live with my dad in the UK, I was on holiday with him in Greece and he’s the best dad in the world. There is no way he would do something so disgusting.

“I’ve told the Greek police this, but they are just ignoring me. This is an incredibly stressful, traumatic situation but there is hope for us. We’ve been told by the judge that if my dad’s DNA test clears him, then he will be free to go.”

CCTV footage from the bar showed a man making “obscene gestures” towards the woman before hitting her in the face and later attacking her on the beach, police said.

Medical examiners told local news outlet Neakriti that the woman had injuries consistent with rape.

Police said the woman, who said she was drunk at the time, could not remember anything about the attack other than the fact that the attacker had been wearing all-white.

The man appeared in court in Heraklion on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to charges of rape, sexual abuse and domestic violence.

He has been remanded in custody, with his trial set to take place in the next 18 months.

The man’s daughter vowed to remain with him until he was freed.

“I’m only going to go home with him. My mind is all over the place at the moment and I can’t even think straight,” she said.

In her complaint to police, the woman said an unknown man had raped her in a narrow street close to a bar where she had been drinking with her father on June 9.
