British woman makes history with Atlantic hydrogen balloon crossing

  • British adventurer Alicia Hempleman-Adams has become the first woman from the UK to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a hydrogen balloon.
  • She landed in Bastendorf, Luxembourg, on Sunday at 5.58am UTC with teammates Bert Padelt and Peter Cuneo.
  • The team launched from Presque Isle, Maine, on Thursday aboard the Atlantic Explorer, an open-basket gas balloon.
  • Their mission aimed to achieve the first successful manned transoceanic flight in a balloon using hydrogen gas as its sole onboard source of lift.
  • Spending 70 hours in the air, the crew flew at an average altitude of 14,000 feet in an open basket, exposed to the elements.
