British woman killed after being swept away by flood in France

A British woman has died when she was swept away as torrential rain lashed southern France.

The 68-year-old died after being caught in a flood outside her home in Cazouls-d'Herault, according to local media.

She was reportedly taken to hospital by helicopter on Wednesday after being found by emergency workers nearby.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Cazouls-d'Herault and our staff are in contact with the French authorities."

More than 2,000 emergency services workers have been mobilised to deal with the aftermath of the storms, which hit eight French counties, the country's Interior Ministry said.

The town of Beziers was among the hardest hit, with dozens of people evacuated as more rain fell in 24 hours than in the whole of the previous year.

Across the region, streets and roads have been severely damaged and covered with mud, forcing residents to clean up.

Blocks of cement have been moved by flood water.

"I've never seen water rise that fast. I've lived here for 20 years and this is the first time," Jean-Louis, a retiree in Servian, near Beziers, told Reuters TV.

France's national weather authority said storms and heavy rains could continue through to Thursday.

It also said on its website that 12 centimetres (4.72 inches) of rain had fallen in less than three hours in the
Bezier area of Herault department.

Rainfall reached 16.5 cm (6.5 inches) in 24 hours in the city of Beziers.
