A British woman is in a critical condition in hospital after falling six floors from her hotel balcony in Benidorm, Spain.
Her husband, 40, was arrested in the early hours of Saturday on suspicion of attempted homicide but has since been released from custody by a judge, Sky News reports.
The couple were staying at the four-star Rio Park hotel in the seaside resort on the eastern coast of Spain. Police were called to reports of an emergency around midnight.
The woman, 36, remains in a nearby hospital.
A spokesman for Spain’s National Police had earlier said: “Officers have arrested a British man on suspicion of attempted homicide after his wife, who is also British, plunged from the sixth-floor balcony of their hotel in Benidorm.
“The arrest is a preventative measure and it will be up to a judge to decide what happens next after the man appears before him in the next day or so.
“The couple were sharing the same room and we are talking about a foreigner who has no ties to Spain so we are under an obligation to make the arrest as we try to determine what happened.”
Local reports said witnesses had told police the man was in their hotel room and the woman on the balcony when she went over the edge.
The Rio Park hotel is described as “recently refurbished” and located in the centre of Benidorm, just minutes from the main promenade.
Benidorm is a popular destination among British travellers, with an area known as Little England.
A number of British teenagers have died after falling from hotel balconies during trips to Europe.
Tom Channon, 18, fell seven floors while on holiday in Magaluf celebrating the end of his A-levels in 2018. He was the third Brit to die from a fall in the same resort that year.
