British woman dies in mystery fall from Spanish holiday hotel balcony

Police are probing the mystery death of a 48-year-old British woman from a hotel balcony in Majorca capital Palma at about 8am this morning (Wednesday). The woman plunged from the eighth floor of a hotel on the main seafront Paseo Maritimo promenade.

She was reported to be alone in her room at the time of the incident and National Police officers are investigating. Witnesses immediately called emergency services following the tragedy during morning rush-hour.

According to reports she died at the scene despite the efforts of medics and police officers. An air ambulance also attended.

The woman, confirmed to be a British tourist, had only been in Majorca for two days. The Homicide Group of the National Police has taken charge of the investigation.

Officers are trying to establish the circumstances leading up to the tragic incident. The Paseo Maritimo is one of Palma's main streets, which runs along the yacht-filled harbour towards the city's famous cathedral.

It is lined with hotels, bars and restaurants as well as blocks of offices and luxury apartments.
