British woman completes 253 mile Amazon trek through rainforest in world first

A British woman has become the first to complete a 253 mile trek through the Amazon rainforest.

Lucy Shepherd, 29, was accompanied by four brothers from the indigenous Amerindian tribes on a 50 day journey, and is thought to be the first person to take such a route.

Beginning in Guyana, the trek took her 1,300 metres up through the Kanuku mountains all the way to the Brazilian border.

At points, the density of the forest was so great that the team spent 17 days without seeing any sunlight.

For food, Lucy, who is from Suffolk, caught fish with a bow and arrow and ate cassava, a woody shrub native to South America.

Lucy said: “I'm exhausted but elated. It was a dangerous but unimaginably rewarding journey and to see what we’ve achieved together as a team is just incredible.

The spirit of everyone involved, from my team to the local villagers and farmers who shared their produce, has kept me buoyant throughout the challenge.”

The expedition was completed to highlight the need for increased protection of the Amazon rainforest, which continues to be decimated.

Lucy, who is the youngest ever member of the Royal Geographical Society, has been taking part in expeditions around the world for over a decade.

Her trips have included going to the Bolivian Andes and spending 10 weeks in glacial Svalbard.

The Kanuku mountains are known locally as 'The Mountains of Life' because of their huge biodiversity.

In 2011, their status as a protected nature reserve was enshrined in law, though in practice large scale logging and mining still persists.

Lucy has no plans to rest on her laurels, and is already planning to head to the Arctic for another trip in 2022.
