A British woman was among three people killed as torrential rain storms hit southern France this week.

The 68-year-old was swept away by a violent flood outside her home in Cazouls-d'Herault, according to local media.

She was found by emergency workers nearby and was rushed to hospital by helicopter on Wednesday, where she later died.

Fierce storms have been lashing the country over the last few days.

Cars have been swept away and roads have been severely damaged as the wet weather plagued eight counties counties along the Mediterranean Sea and inland areas.

Blocks of cement were also moved by the force of the floodwaters.

The town of Beziers was among the hardest hit, with dozens of people evacuated, the county's Interior Ministry said.

It saw more rain in 24 hours than in the whole previous year.

More than 2,000 emergency services workers have been mobilised to deal with the aftermath of the storms, which hit eight French counties.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Cazouls-d'Herault and our staff are in contact with the French authorities."

It comes as two people were killed by flash floods in Italy on Tuesday, while police in Spain said they found the body of a man hours after he was reported missing from a nearby town.
