British travellers to pay new fee to enter 26 countries in 2022

UK citizens who are not EU residents will be made to pay the same fee as other travellers starting from 2022.

A new travel authorisation system, European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), will oversee security credentials and travel fees starting within the next year.

EITAS is a visa waiver programme in which travellers are required to fill an online form and pay €7 (£5.89) to enter the 26 countries in the Schengen Area.

EITAS' online form will be available via an official website and/or an app for mobile phones.

The Schengen Area is made up of 26 countries and includes popular holiday destinations to UK tourists like Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Portugal.

It does not include the UK, meaning you must pass through an immigration checkpoint and show your passport.

UK citizens will be subject to the same rules as other non-EU residents.

Most EU countries are within the Schengen Area - which allows unrestricted movement - with exception to Ireland, Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania and Cyprus.

That means British travellers will not have to pay to enter Ireland.

The European Commission website says EITAS will be "operational by the end of 2022".

The website states: "After filling in an online application form, the system will conduct checks against EU information systems for borders and security and, in the vast majority of cases, issue a travel authorisation within minutes."

"In limited cases, where further checks on the traveller are needed, the issuing of the travel authorisation could take up to 30 days.

"The ETIAS travel authorisation will be a mandatory pre-condition for entry to the Schengen States.

"It will be checked together with the travel documents by the border guards when crossing the EU border."
