A senior police officer who was interviewed by colleagues for alleged fraud died hours later.
The death of Detective Chief Inspector Rob Widdowson is being investigated by British Transport Police after he died near Syston on Monday evening (June 3).
Delays to train services were reported on Monday and it was confirmed someone had died after being hit by a train.
But Leicestershire Police, who Det Chief Insp Widdowson worked for, have not said whether its officer was the deceased in this case, LeicestershireLive reports.
The force said: "Leicestershire Police is extremely sad to announce the sudden death of one of its most senior detectives.
"Detective Chief Inspector Rob Widdowson died during the afternoon of Monday, June 3, near Syston.
"The circumstances surrounding his death are being investigated by the British Transport Police.
"Earlier in the day, he had been interviewed by officers in connection with a fraud allegation that had been made against him by a member of the public.
"The investigation into that allegation was being led by the force’s professional standards department.
"As a result of his death, we have referred ourselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
"The tragic news of Det Chief Insp Widdowson’s death was announced to his colleagues yesterday.
"His family have asked that their need for privacy at this terrible time is respected."
An experienced detective, Det Chief Insp Widdowson, was the senior investigator on a number of high-profile cases.
