A British skier was among three people who died in an avalanche at a ski resort in Italy yesterday.

Rescue teams using aircraft and dogs had been desperately searching for four skiers after the incident in the Alpine ski resort of Courmayeur on Sunday.

The bodies of the three victims, described as one British man and two French “boys”, were found today, according to local media.

The search is ongoing for another Brit who is still missing, the Foreign Office said.

The two pairs of skiers were in an off-piste area in Valle d'Aosta and crossed each other by chance, torino.repubblica.it reports.

The alarm was raised by friends of the two Brits at about midday on Sunday but the search had to be suspended yesterday evening due to the risk of more avalanches.

Reports said it was supposed to be the final day of their holiday.

On Sunday, two Italian skiers were also killed by avalanches, one in the Aosta Valley region, the other in the Alto Adige region.

Authorities had warned that avalanche danger was high in the Italian Alps over the weekend.

The Foreign Office said on Monday it is assisting the family of a missing British man.

A spokesman said: "Following an avalanche in Valle d'Aosta, our staff are supporting the family of a British man who has been reported missing, and are in contact with the Italian search and rescue team."
