A British tourist has died in a drowning incident on the Greek island of Kefalonia.
The 75-year-old was swimming during a boat trip on Wednesday morning near Ammoudi Beach when he was pulled from the sea unconscious.
The tourist boat had stopped to allow passengers to swim along the coast, and the man had dived into the water for a swim.
Other passengers noticed he was unresponsive in the water and pulled him back on board, where he was given first aid.
He was then taken to the Port of Fiskardo and transferred for treatment to the Sami Health Centre in Kefalonia, but he could not be saved.
Despite best efforts from medical teams, he was sadly pronounced dead, according to local press.
The Fiskardo Port Station said it is investigating the exact cause of death.
A Foreign Office Spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities.”
Just a few days ago, another British man, 74, was found dead on a sun lounger at Stalis Beach on the Greek island of Crete.
The tourist reportedly experienced “a strong feeling” of sickness at around midday on July 20 before losing consciousness.
The Hellenic National Center of Emergency Care was called to the scene, but their efforts were unsuccessful with the man being pronounced dead shortly after their arrival. An autopsy is currently underway to determine the cause of death.
