British teenager's regret at travelling to Ukraine to fight as he recalls losing friends

A British teenager has shared his regret at travelling to Ukraine to fight - despite having no military training.

A young man called 'Alex' appeared on ITV's Good Morning Britain today with his mum, travelling to Poland and then onto Ukraine as he wanted to fight and support the country amid the terrible events happening there.

He has since returned home, after claiming he wasn't giving any training he was promised. He also said that he and his friends struggled with food poisoning and other issues on the frontline.

'Alex's' mum shared how he talked about going one evening, and they found his bed empty the next morning.

The British teenager was interviewed by Susanna and Martin on Good Morning Britain today (ITV)

During a chat with Good Morning Britain's Martin Lewis and Susanna Reid, 'Alex' explained how he lost some friends in the conflict, after missiles fell onto where he was.

"I didn't think I was going to make it. As soon as I heard that first missile go past, I kind of snapped into a calm state. I got my boots on, I got something warm over me and I ran straight out into the forest and looked for the first trench," he explained.

The teenager wished to remain anonymous (ITV)

"As soon as we got into the forest, I started seeing and hearing explosions all around me and it was worrying, because every time you'd hear a whistle go over your head, you jumped to the floor thinking it was your last."

He added: "When you heard the explosion or saw the fire light up the sky, you kind of felt relief that you were still going. It was that point where you'd get up and keep going and running to find a trench."

Asked if he knew anyone who died, he said: "I know a few people that were killed in this attack. Some of them I was with for the whole six days, some of them I met in Poland and obviously, they passed away and I saw some of their faces in body bags."

He has since decided not to watch or listen to anything about Ukraine as he worries it'll make him want to go over and fight again.

"No, I shut everything off about Ukraine around me just so I don't feel that emotion again," he said as he was asked if he watches the news, "I don't want to feel that hatred to just go back over there. It would be a stupid idea to just go back over there."
