Kent teenager Emma Raducanu upstaged former French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova 6-2 6-4 in a stunning second-round upset at Wimbledon.
The 18-year-old, who had sat her A-levels just two months ago in maths and economics, was handed a wildcard for the main draw on the basis of her performances and her potential.
And she duly repaid that faith by backing up a first-round victory in taking out Vondrousova.
Raducanu, who was born in Toronto but moved to London at the age of two, dominated the opening set and, despite dropping 3-0 behind in the second, showed remarkable calm and maturity to fight back and win six of the next seven games for the victory.
Already, she had been the only British woman left standing in the women’s draw after a series of first-round losses by her countrymen.
And she continued to exceed expectations with another scalp for a player ranked just 338th in the world – a ranking that will be infinitely higher in the aftermath of Wimbledon - going into the tournament.
The result warranted her a massive £115,000 payday for the A-level student.
