British Summer Time Festival axed as coronavirus cancels Little Mix and Taylor Swift gigs

Little Mix and Taylor Swift are among the acts to have gigs cancelled as the British Summer Time Festival was axed.

The major UK festival has been pulled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

That means a string of huge concerts scheduled to go ahead at London's Hyde Park later this year will no longer take place.

Organisers said it was "the only possible outcome" amid the crisis, adding that "safety comes first".

BST had been due to host some of the biggest names in music in July, including Post Malone, Little Mix, Kendrick Lamar, Pearl Jam, Taylor Swift and Duran Duran.

In a statement, organisers said: "In addition to the Government rightly enforcing a prolonged period of social isolation, we would not want to place any extra strain on the emergency services, who we are lucky enough to have working alongside us at our events.

"We have the utmost respect for them and wish to express our admiration for their dedication and professionalism, which is proving so vital at this time.

"We also have a responsibility to our staff, fans, event workers, suppliers and sponsors, so we have been closely monitoring all developments before making a final decision."

Little Mix - X Factor winners Jesy Nelson, Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall - have also had to postpone the release of their new album and their own tour.

Their BBC show The Search has also been affected by the pandemic.

They had filmed the audition stages for the talent show, which is searching for an act to open for them on their tour, but have had to postpone the next stages of the contest.

It was due to be presented on the BBC by South Shields comedian and Strictly Come Dancing star Chris Ramsey.

A string of festivals and gigs across the UK and the world have had to be cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

It would be impossible for them to go ahead with the social-distancing rules that have been put in place to protect everyone and stop the spread of the virus.
