British student lands in Dubai on cramped cargo jet after 'insane' holiday to Kabul

A British student who was forced into hiding when his ‘holiday’ in Afghanistan went wrong has been evacuated.

Miles Routledge, 21, travelled alone to the country despite Foreign Office warnings and reports about Taliban advances.

The Loughborough University student became an online sensation after positive video updates from what he claims was a Nato-controlled safe house.

He told followers he had shielded from gunfire and seen dead bodies in the street during his jaunt to the troubled country.

On Tuesday, he told followers that he had got a place on an evacuation plane and landed in Dubai.

He wrote on social media: "The happy ending: landed in Dubai thanks to the brilliant people at the British army. All safe!"

A video on his Facebook page showed him wearing what appears to be a protective vest inside a cramped military plane.

In voice notes sent by Mr Routledge to the Press Association news agency on Monday afternoon, rapid gunshots akin to machine gun fire could be heard in the background.

At the time, he claimed to be in a compound near the airport where Western forces were battling to regain control of Kabul's airport.

He said he felt safe despite the violence, adding: "Ngl (not going to lie), you get used to it, it's like this at night.

"I'm just ready to run with a backpack at a moment's notice. These Nato guys are amazing, they really do make you feel safe and looked after."

He added: "We've got a pool, canteen, gym, clothes machine and even a shop. It's comfortable when we can use that stuff."

Many have criticised the physics student for his trip to Afghanistan, which he says he chose after picking it off a list of the most dangerous places in the world to visit.

He posted several updates about his journey on Facebook, streaming site Twitch and the 4chan discussion board.

In a message to followers, he admitted he had "bitten off more than I can chew", but had known the risks when he travelled.

Nato, the Ministry of Defence and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) are yet to comment on his claims.
