British Soap Awards axed for second year running as Covid puts production on hold

The British Soap Awards have been axed for a second year running over Covid restrictions.

The event had been due to take place in June, but ITV bosses, who are behind the event, have now confirmed it won't be happening.

Coronavirus restrictions are due to be lifted over the summer but it's believed the decision was made over health and safety fears.

An ITV spokesperson told the Daily Star : "As a result of the pandemic, and following careful consideration of the ongoing safety measures in place for both drama productions and live events, ITV can confirm that the British Soap Awards will not take place this year...

"We look forward to hosting the awards again, when it is safe to do so and honouring the actors and shows that are so close to viewers' hearts."

It's hoped the awards will return with a start-studded show in 2022.

Phillip Schofield has been hosting the British Soap Awards since 2006 (ITV)

It comes after the awards were previously cancelled in 2020 meaning soap fans will have to go two years without seeing gongs handed out to their favourite stars.

It's believed the decision to axe the event was made earlier this week and staff who work on the awards were informed today.

An insider told the Star: "The British Soap Awards is the highlight of the year for everyone in the soaps. It’s a chance for everyone to celebrate the hard work they’ve put in throughout the year.

"It's also a chance for everyone to see each other and have a bit of a night out. The afterparty is always a lot of fun!

"But everyone understands why this decision has been made and supports the organisers."

The awards have been running since 1999 and they've been hosted by Phillip Schofield since 2006.

Other hosts over the years have included Fern Britton, who hosted two ceremonies alongside her This Morning co-star Phil, Paul O'Grady, Matthew Kelly and Richard and Judy.

Last year, ITV aired a special replacement show celebrating the last 21 years of the awards. It's now known if they plan to do something similar again this summer.
