British snowboarder plunges 100ft to death in French Alps

A 50-year-old British man has fallen 100 feet to his death died while snowboarding in the French Alps.

The man was on holiday with his family in Avoriaz.

According to initial findings, he was snowboarding off-piste in an area called Pointe de la Chaux Fleurie in Montriond.

He fell 100 feet from a rocky ledge. Mountain rescue was alerted just before midday.

A spokesman said: “The man was with his family on holiday. He was in an off-piste area when he fell 30 metres.

“A witness alerted mountain rescuers at around midday. But he was pronounced dead at the scene.

“An inquiry has been opened into his death.”

Montriond lies at the entrance to the famous Portes du Soleil, popular with British holidaymakers.

It is believed the man was alone at the time of the accident, having left his wife and child on the marked pistes.
