British public have spoken and they want OUT...of Eurovision

It is a question that deeply divides the country.

Families are torn apart, and every meeting with friends has the chance to just totally kick off.

Some people love it, and invest a worrying amount of their personality in it.

Others hate it - and they just can't stop telling you how much they hate it, as if them hating it makes even the slightest difference to how you live your life.

I am of course talking about Eurovision.

But as Britain prepares to take another kicking at the hands of European audiences it turns out that Brits want Out.

That is right - if a referendum was held on our totally not a joke of a country staying or leaving a song contest we'd Leave.

Louis Walsh says BBC should AXE Eurovision You Decide - and get Simon Cowell involved

And the breakdown? Glad you asked.

52% would vote to leave.

48% to remain.

Exactly. The. Same. As. The. EU. Referendum.

YouGov asked 1,693 GB adults how they would vote on Britain’s continued membership of the Eurovision song contest and when non-voters and the undecideds were removed, it left familiar figures: 52% would vote to leave, and 48% to remain.

Commenting on the results, Matt Smith, Lead Data Journalist at YouGov, said: “The British public’s historically more detached attitude towards the European Union is matched by their feelings on another classic European institution - the Eurovision Song Contest.

Eurovision 2019: UK entry Michael Rice claims it's 'about time' we had a good song

"While other countries tend to engage with the show in the spirit in which it is intended, Britons are more likely to be watching ironically.

"And with Britons voting 52/48 in favour of leaving the contest, these numbers serve as reminder of the ongoing division taking place within our country.”
