8.45pm: and host Jon Snow introduces the first award is for the night young journalist of the year. Expectant hush.
There are two high commended awards - Helen Pidd of the Guardian and Jerome Taylor of the Independent.
The winner is unanimous - KATE MANSEY of the SUNDAY MIRROR. She wins a £5,000 travel bursary. "It's great to have Jon Snow say 'go for it baby'" she tells the crowd.
For Cartoonist of the Year, again two highly commended awards, to David Brown of the Independent and Ingram Pinn of the Financial Times. The winner is MATT PRICHETT OF THE DAILY TELEGRAPH AND SUNDAY TELEGRAPH. "He nails it every day," says Snow.
For Critic of the year, Ally Ross of the Sun and AA Gill of the Sunday Times, both TV critics, are highly commended.
CHARLES SPENCER OF THE DAILY TELEGRAPH wins critic of the year. He praises his arts editor Sarah Crompton. "You go through down periods where you don't feel sure of your place on teh paper and she's been hughly supportive," says Spencer, spectacles balanced on his forehead.
Digital journalist is the next category, the first time the award has been staged. Daniel Finkelstein is highly commended but the winner is SEAN SMITH OF THE GUARDIAN. His picture editor Roger Tooth accepts on Smith's behalf, saying he is brave journalist but shy and retiring.
Interviewer of the year is next, and Simon Hattenstone of the Guardian and Nigel Farndale of the Daily Telegraph are highly commended.
The winner is freelance CHRISSY ILEY, who write for both the OBSERVER MAGAZINE AND SUNDAY TIMES MAGAZINE.

Columnist of the year Highly commended: Lucy Kellaway, Financial Times and Janice Turner of the Times Winner: MATTHEW NORMAN OF THE INDEPENDENT He gives one of the best winners speeches ever: "I've had a few so I am going to say that you very much, indeed this is a delight". He then sits down.
Campaign of the year A hotly contested category. Highly commended: Daily Mail, Ben Parkinson campaign, The Guardian, BAE Scandal. Winner: THE SUN, Help our Heroes Tom Newton Dunn takes to the stage for the second time of the evening.
Feature writer of the year Highly commended: David Smith, Sunday Times, Ariel Leve, freelance, Sunday Times Winner: AA GILL, SUNDAY TIMES "The best just got better," says Snow.
