British pet owners set to spend £873million on Christmas gifts for beloved fur babies

Pet owners across the UK are set to splash out £873million on dogs and cats this Christmas despite the cost of living crisis.

Four-fifths (82%) of Britons plan to spend up to £50 on their furry companions.

More than three-fifths of pet owners will buy their animals a Christmas present this year, taking spending on pets to new highs over the festive season.

Owners are even prioritising spending money on pets over family with aunties and uncles set to miss out, Co-op Insurance research suggests.

Two-fifths (40%) of those planning to shell out big bucks on their pets say they won’t spend anything on gifts for extended family.

Animal lovers will still splash out on their four-legged friends despite the cost of a traditional Christmas dinner having risen by more than a third.

A recent survey by Good Housekeeping found the cheapest festive meal made up of 11 items would cost £29.26, up from £21.71 in 2021.

Head of Co-op Pet Insurance Andrew Nevitt said: “Despite the cost of living, it seems we’re still a nation looking to include our pets in family traditions.

“Pet owners obviously want to make sure their dogs and cats are included in the Christmas celebrations.”
