British mother of five who fled Isis in Syria tells of killings

Shukee Begum plans to return to the UK (Channel 4)

A mother who took her five children to Isis-controlled territory in Syria to see her husband has warned: “Everything here takes ages. Except killing. That’s done very quickly.”

Shukee Begum, a 33-year-old law graduate from Oldham, has managed to flee with her children to an area controlled by Jabhat al-Nusra, which is allied with al-Qaeda but opposed to Isis. She managed to speak to her family to say she was safe and that she plans to return to the UK, Channel 4 News reported.

Ms Begum said she had gone to Syria last year to try to persuade her husband, a jihadi fighter, to leave Isis. In a letter to her relatives, she explained: “All I keep thinking was I don’t want the kids never to see their father again, and I don’t want the baby to never have met his dad.

“I suggested we meet in Turkey but he said it was unsafe. So I came [to Syria]. I intended to see him then go back. I thought I’d be allowed back and didn’t think he would stop us … But he says he didn’t want us to leave so therefore will not help us back.”

She said she hated life under Isis, particularly its willingness to kill people. Her sister, Shopna Begum, insisted: “She was against Isis, she didn’t agree with anything they did.”
