British man killed wife by running over her while trying to park his car in Greece, police say

A British man killed his wife when he ran over her while trying to park his car, police in Greece say.

Officers on the island of Skiathos are investigating the incident which they are describing as an accident.

The couple had returned home from to their villa in the early hours of Wednesday when the 62-year-old drove into his wife without realising she was there, police spokeswoman Chryssa Panayiotou told the Guardian.

The woman, a 58-year-old Brit, was killed instantly.

Police believe she got out of the car under the influence of alcohol before collapsing on the ground.

The couple often holidayed on the island and lived out there permanently during the summer months.

The man, who was arrested but later released pending trial, was also tested for alcohol in his blood.

According to authorities, he has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and the case is being treated as an accident.

A coroner in the central Greek town of Larissa is expected to carry out an autopsy in the coming days.
