British man drowns in Austrian lake after suffering from cramp in his foot

A British man has died in Austria after getting cramp in his foot while swimming, police said.

The 33-year-old drowned at the Schwarzindien beach area in Mondsee, on Wednesday, August 7.

Officers state that the man was with a 36-year-old woman, also from England, when he complained of pain before going below the water surface.

Police said that when the Briton didn't come back up from the water, the woman "screamed for help."

Other bathers at the area, which is less than 20 miles east of Salzburg, reportedly tried to help, but the man's body was recovered at around 4.30pm local time.

No further details have been released.

What is cramp?

Cramp is when a muscle suddenly shortens and becomes tight, and it can happen at any time, according to the NHS.

They can be very painful and make it hard to move.

The NHS advise stretching and massaging the muscle to help ease the pain.
