British man feared dead off Reunion Island after hand and wedding ring found in shark's stomach

A British man is believed to have been killed in a shark attack after a hand wearing his wedding ring was found inside the stomach of one of the predators.

The man, said to be a 44-year-old from Scotland, was swimming off the coast of Reunion Island while on holiday with his family when he disappeared.

The gruesome discovery was made when a Tiger shark thought to be a threat to holidaymakers was killed.

Tests will now be carried out on the detached hand to confirm whether or not it belongs to the missing Brit. However, his wife has identified the ring as his.

It is possible the man died at sea and his body attracted sharks and fish.

Previous attempts by search parties to find the man had failed.

Reunion, a French island in the Indian Ocean, is considered to be a high-risk area for sharks and is currently having a shark crisis with frequent attacks around the island.

In October, French President Emmanuel Macron met locals on Reunion who said they want to remove dozens of sharks from the waters around the island.

Mr Macron said he was alarmed by the number of deadly attacks - five in the last two years - and pledged to help reopen the territories waters to activities by 2022.
