British man dies after sending WhatsApp message to family asking for help from Marbella mountain

A British hiker has been found dead after climbing a mountain near the Costa del Sol.

The man, who hasn't been named, got into trouble while reaching the summit of La Concha, near Marbella, the Mirror reports.

A search party was launched at about 4pm on Saturday after the man sent a message to his family in the UK asking for help.

His loved ones contacted police in the UK, who then contacted Spanish police.

Civil Guard officers based in Ojen near Marbella conducted the search, along with firefighters from the region.

The search had to be suspended late on Saturday night due to a lack of light.

His body was found at around 9am on Sunday morning by officers in a police helicopter.

It was not immediately clear if he sent the SOS to his family because he got lost or had suffered an accident.

No further details have been released about the man.

La Concha is just under 4,000ft above sea level and has views of the Costa del Sol coastline, the ocean and Gibraltar and Morocco on a clear day.

It is a popular weekend destination for locals, expats and holidaymakers, although summer is not an advisable time to try the hike during the main part of the day because of the high summer temperatures.

It takes about three hours to reach the top of La Concha from Marbella or a car park area near the inland town of Ojen.
