A 70-year-old British man has been arrested in Greece following allegations he raped his own daughter.

The man had been drinking with the 34-year-old woman in a bar along a beach on the island of Crete before attacking her, according to reports.

The man, who cannot be identified, was arrested on Saturday two days after his daughter filed a police report.

She said she had been drunk and all she could remember was that her attacker had worn the same all-white outfit as her father.

CCTV footage from the bar showed the father making “obscene gestures” towards his daughter before hitting her in the face and later attacking her on the beach.

Medical examiners told local news outlet Neakriti that the woman had injuries consistent with rape.

According to reports the victim is in a state of disbelief and told the authorities that her father could not have carried out the attack.

The father has until Tuesday to issue a public apology for the alleged crime.

Greek law allows reduced sentences for people who admit their guilt and apologise for certain crimes including rape.

An Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are providing consular support to a British woman in Greece.”
