A 33-year-old Briton has drowned in Austria after suffering a cramp in his foot while swimming in a lake, police say.

Police officers said the man was swimming off the beach in Schwarzindien, near the town of Mondsee, less than 20 miles east of Salzburg, on Wednesday.

The man was taking a dip in Mondsee lake (moon lake) with a 36-year-old woman, also from England, when he complained of cramp in his foot and went below the surface, reports say.

Police said: "When he did not come back to the surface of the water, she screamed for help."

People on the beach swam out to try and save the man however they were unsuccessful, according to Austrian newspaper the Oberösterreichische Nachrichten .

Divers found the man five metres underwater, the newspaper reports.

A doctor at the scene attempted to resuscitate the man but was not able to bring him back to life.

The swimmer's body was recovered at around 4.30pm local time.
