British lawmakers have approved a motion calling for a diplomatic boycott of next year's Winter Games in Beijing to protest China's alleged human rights abuses.
Adopted unanimously by a bipartisan group in the House of Commons on Thursday, the proposal calls for the British government to decline invitations for representatives and royal family members to attend the Games.
The motion states the Games should not be held in a country that has been accused of genocide. Although not legally binding, the proposal reaffirms Britain's tough stance on China.
The motion urges the U.K. government not to send representatives to the opening and closing ceremonies unless there is an end to the atrocities against Uighurs and other ethnic groups in the Xinjiang region.
During the discussion, concerns were also expressed about the human rights situations in Hong Kong and Tibet, and several lawmakers called for increased pressure on China to resolve the issues.
In April, the House of Commons passed a motion recognizing the suppression of Uighurs as "genocide."
