BIFA nominations 2018: The Favourite leads the way at British Independent Film Awards

Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Favourite leads the nominations for the 2018 British Independent Film Awards, picking up 13 nods ahead of this year’s prize ceremony.

The black comedy, which follows events in the court of Queen Anne in the 18th century, has been recognised for Best British Independent Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay.

Stars of the film have also been individually recognised, with Olivia Colman picking up nominations for Best Actress and Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz both competing in the Best Supporting Actress category.

American Animals is the second most nominated film, having been recognised in 11 categories, while Beast and You Were Never Really Here picked up ten and eight nominations respectively.

Gemma Arterton (The Escape) and Maxine Peake (Funny Cow) are nominated for Best Actress alongside Colman, while Joe Cole (A Prayer Before Dawn), Rupert Everett (The Happy Prince), Steve Coogan (Stan & Ollie), Joaquin Phoenix (You Were Never Really Here) and Charlie Plummer (Lean on Pete) all feature in the Best Actor category.

BIFA also say that a record number of women are being celebrated at this year’s awards, with more than 40 per cent of the individual nominations recognising female talent.
