A British hiker missing for over a week after sending a last text message that he was lost has been found dead, according to reports.
Matthew Hall had not been seen since July 9 when he set off from the B&B Ploncher hotel in Chiavenna, Lombardy, to go for a hike.
He sent “I lost the path and stopped to rest” in his last text message to his friend after setting off into the mountains.
He was found dead in a crevice close to where he sent his last message on Wednesday, according to Italy’s biggest newspaper Corriere Della Sera.
Search teams spotted his body and a helicopter had to be used to recover him because of the high risk to rescuers, it was reported.
The alarm was raised by the hotel’s owners after Matthew did not collect his breakfast for several days, while they initially thought he had left early for hikes.
But on the day of checkout, the owners found his belongings were untouched and that his backpack was not in his room.
The 33-year-old, from Hull, was supposed to fly home on Saturday July 12 but failed to make contact with his friends and family back home.
A Foreign Office spokesperson has been contacted.
They said previously: "We are supporting the family of a British man missing in Italy and are in contact with the local authorities."
