British Grand Prix to go ahead behind closed doors if at all

The British Grand Prix will go ahead behind closed doors, if at all, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Silverstone managing director Stuart Pringle has contacted ticket-holders to inform them they are "unable to stage this year's Grand Prix in front of fans".

The first 10 races of the season have been postponed or cancelled, with the French Grand Prix scrapped on Monday and Austria now earmarked as the season-opener.

The British Grand Prix is due to follow Austria on July 19, but organisers could still postpone the Silverstone race.

"I am extremely disappointed to tell you that we are unable to stage this year's British Grand Prix in front of fans at Silverstone," Pringle said in a statement.

"We have left this difficult decision for as long as possible, but it is abundantly clear given the current conditions in the country and the government requirements in place now and for the foreseeable future, that a Grand Prix under normal conditions is just not going to be possible.

"Our obligations to protect the health and safety of everyone involved in preparing and delivering the event, our volunteer marshals and Race makers, and of course, you, the amazing fans, means that this is the best, safest and only decision we could make."

“Following this weekend’s news from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, we are now working with them on the viability of an event behind closed doors.”

Pringle had last week told Standard Sport that Silverstone could yet host what would be the first race of a revised 2020 calendar.

Ticket-holders for this year’s British Grand Prix can either transfer their tickets to 2021 or else get a full refund.
