British Grand Prix: Racing Point's Lance Stroll fastest in second practice session as Alex Albon crashes out

Racing Point's Lance Stroll sprung a surprise after going fastest in the second practice session at Silverstone ahead of Sunday's British Grand Prix.

The Canadian put in a respectable lap time of a 1:27.274 to finish nine-hundredths of a second ahead of Red Bull driver Alex Albon.

Albon suffered a heavy crash at Stowe after putting his RB16 into the wall, causing the session to be red flagged.

The 23-year-old walked away from the accident unhurt but was taken to hospital for medical tests, with his crew facing another big job to fix the car in time for qualifying on Saturday.

Valtteri Bottas put his Mercedes in third with Charles Leclerc managing to split the two Silver Arrows in fourth, as Lewis Hamilton - bidding for a seventh win at Silverstone - was only fifth fastest.

Max Verstappen bailed out of his flying lap after being blocked by Haas' Romain Grosjean and finished 14th on the medium tyre.

Sebastian Vettel struggled for pace once again in the Ferrari SF1000, finishing 18th at the end of the practice session.

Nico Hulkenberg, replacing Sergio Perez for Racing Point after the Mexican tested positive for Covid-19, finished seventh as he prepares for his 178th race start.
