Norris wins from Piastri to take first Silverstone triumph
17:23 , Arthur FerridgeThe British Grand Prix delivered high drama once again on Sunday, as changeable conditions and multiple safety cars delivered Lando Norris’ first-ever home win and Nico Hulkenberg’s Formula One podium debut at the 239th time of asking.

FINAL: Norris wins at Silverstone!
16:41 , Arthur FerridgeNorris crosses the line in first, ahead of his teammate Piatri.
But far more importantly, it is a first-ever career podium finish for Nico Hulkenberg!
Verstappen recovers well from a difficult afternoon to finish fifth. That pole position start feels an awfully long time ago.
Here’s the rest of the order:
4 - Hamilton
5 - Verstappen
6 - Stroll
7 - Gasly
8 - Alonso
9 - Albon
10 - Russell
11 - Bearman
12 - Sainz
13 - Ocon
14 - Leclerc
15 - Tsunoda
Lap 51/52
16:39 , Arthur FerridgeMuch has been said of Norris’ mentality, but today, when push came to shove, he has kept a cool head and shouldered the pressure with aplomb.
He took the opportunity handed to him and ran with it.
Lap 50/52
16:38 , Arthur FerridgeLooking like the order will hold, here.
Another difficult outing for Tsunoda, who is dead last and 38 seconds shy of the closest car, Charles Leclerc.
Lap 48/52
16:35 , Arthur FerridgeThere will be no team orders, say McLaren.
With six seconds between the cars, though, Norris should hold onto this win.
Lap 46/52
16:33“Just be careful out there,” says the McLaren pit wall to Lando Norris.
Just six laps to the flag now. Piastri is catching his teammate quickly, though, and has already served his penalty. Could he lay claim to the win?
Meanwhile, Hulkenberg is closer than ever to his first-ever career podium.
Lap 45/52
16:30 , Arthur FerridgeAlonso flies past Albon on the back straight to take eighth place.
Piastri suffers a snap and takes to the run-off area, but holds onto second.
Lap 45/52
16:29Norris comes in for medium tires and will hold onto the race lead.
He just has to keep it on track for the next seven laps to get this over the line.
Lap 44/52
16:28Ocon becomes the latest dry-shod car to leave the track, but did so after hitting his teammate Ollie Bearman. Shades of the Grosjean/Magnussen dynamic of old for Haas.
Lap 43/52
16:27 , Arthur FerridgeHulkenberg follows the trend and pits for mediums, but suffers a slow 4.6s stop. Despite that, he has a considerable gap to fourth-placed Hamilton.
Leclerc follows him in.
Race leader Piastri comes in for slicks, too, serving his penalty in the process, while Norris stays out on his wet tires.
Lap 41/52
16:26 , Arthur FerridgeSeven of the 15 cars on track are now wearing green-striped intermediate tires, while the remainder are on a blend of medium and hard.
Hamilton comes out of the pits and immediately runs off, seemingly devoid of grip and temperature in his fresh rubber.
Lap 41/52
16:25With 11 laps remaining, Norris is catching Piastri. He is already plenty close enough to inherit the win, though.
After struggling to get past Hulkenberg, Hamilton pits for dry tyres. Also pitting are Stroll, Verstappen, and Gasly.
Lap 39/52
16:21 , Arthur FerridgeRussell spins into the gravel!
Still too early for slicks, it would seem. He manages to keep the car going, but what effect will that have on his tires?
They should at least be slightly warmer now, if nothing else.
Lap 39/52
16:21 , Arthur FerridgeGeorge Russell follows Alonso in donning new shoes. He goes for the hard tire, while the Spaniard took the medium.
Alonso, though, does not look to be having much fun with his slicks on the still damp track.
Lap 38/52 - New fastest lap
16:18 , Arthur FerridgeOscar Piastri hits the new fastest lap of the race: 1:40.351.
Interestingly, Fernando Alonso comes in for dry tires...
Lap 37/52
16:17The analysts suggest that, once he gets close enough to activate his DRS, Hamilton should have no issue getting past Hulkenberg.
He has a significant advantage in terms of straight-line speed and is catching him in the corners, too, so the writing is rather on the wall for the German.
Lap 37/52
16:16Leclerc bombs down the inside on Alex Albon to take 11th. Not a pretty move, but they all count.
Lap 35/52
16:13Hulkenberg passes Stroll to move into the podium places, and Hamilton is opportunistic as he also gets by the Canadian!
A tough couple of corners for the Aston Martin driver.
Lap 34/52
16:12 , Arthur FerridgeThere is plenty of racing going on up and down the track.
Russell is doing his best to get past Pierre Gasly in sixth, while Verstappen is pushing hard to move into ninth, currently occupied by Sainz.
Hulkenberg is closing in on Stroll also.
Lap 33/52
16:09 , Arthur FerridgeOscar Piastri reports that the track is drying out slowly, though it is ‘still not close to slicks’.
Lap 33/52
16:09 , Arthur FerridgeNico Hulkenberg still holds the unenviable record of having started the most F1 races without finishing on the podium.
He currently sits fourth and is less than a second behind Stroll. Could he finally break his duck today, 15 years on from his debut with Williams?
Lap 31/52
16:07 , Arthur FerridgePiastri remains three seconds clear of second-placed Norris and 17 clear of Stroll in third.
Should the race stop now, he would be demoted to second. But with 21 laps still to go, anything could happen!
Lap 30
16:04 , Arthur FerridgeThrough goes Hamilton! Gasly runs a little wide, and that is opportunity aplenty for the Briton, who will now set his sights on Nico Hulkenberg.
Lap 29
16:03 , Arthur FerridgeLewis Hamilton is not content to sit sixth here - he is more used to winning outright at Silverstone.
As such, he is taking the fight to the fifth-placed Gasly, with the gap sitting around half a second.
Lap 27
16:00McLaren team principal Zak Brown says the Papaya outfit are considering their options in regards to challenging Piastri’s penalty.
Tsunoda is also slapped with a 10s penalty for causing a collision.
Lap 25 - Piastri penalised
15:56 , Arthur FerridgeOscar Piastri cops a ten-second penalty for his dramatics at the restart, making Norris the de facto race leader!
Can the Australian open enough of an advantage to secure this win despite the time penalty?
Lap 24
15:55 , Arthur FerridgeNo more rain is forecast for the rest of the afternoon.
Hamilton runs wide, and loses sixth place to George Russell.
Lap 23
15:53 , Arthur FerridgeOscar Piastri is under investigation for his safety car restart antics.
Lap 22
15:51 , Arthur FerridgePiastri dropped the anchors as he looked to back up the pack, and evidently caught Verstappen out.
As the Australian floored it, the Dutchman spun out. He dropped to 11th, but has already recovered to 10th.
Lap 21 - VERSTAPPEN SPINS
15:50The safety car comes in and Verstappen spins out as Piastri pulls away!
Lap 21
15:47 , Arthur FerridgeAntonelli pits for a fresh set of intermediate tires.
Sky Sports F1 report that he is effectively without a diffuser, which is, of course, a crucial element of the floor’s downforce structure.
He has his work cut out for him to rescue some points from this as he drops to the back of the pack.
Lap 20
15:47 , Arthur FerridgePiastri reports standing water at turn two.
We could stay under the safety car for quite some time.
Lap 19
15:45Remarkably, Antonelli seems to have gotten away from that incident without any damage to his rear diffuser.
Lap 19
15:43 , Arthur FerridgeThe lack of visibility undid Hadjar, who rear-ended Antonelli. He could hardly see the Mercedes car in front of him.
The Italian managed to keep his car on track, somehow.
Ocon pits under the safety car.
SAFETY CAR DEPLOYED
15:42 , Arthur FerridgeThe safety car is back out.
Isaac Hadjar looks to have suffered a heavy smash.
Lap 18
15:41 , Arthur FerridgeRussell goes through on Hamilton as the race gets back underway, but the Ferrari driver goes straight back through on his former teammate.
Leclerc gets the better of Tsunoda, too, taking 13th.
The visibility looks to be dreadful for the drivers - there is lots of spray still.
Lap 17
15:39 , Arthur FerridgePiastri is backing up the field and warming up his tires ahead of the race restart.
SAFETY CAR ENDING
15:39 , Arthur FerridgeThe safety car will come in at the end of lap 17.
Let’s go racing!
Lance Stroll is out of his element
15:37The Canadian sits fourth as the rain shuffles the order here.
He has not finished in the points, which is to say in the top ten, since the Australian Grand Prix back on March 16.
Can he convert his early track position into some all-important championship points?
As things stand
15:34 , Arthur FerridgeHere’s the shuffled running order at lap 15, behind the safety car.
Piastri leads from Verstappen, Norris, Stroll, and Hulkenberg.
Next are Gasly and Ocon, followed by Hamilton, Russell, Alonso, Sainz, and Albon.
Bringing up the rear are Tsunoda, Leclerc, Antonelli, Hadjar, and Bearman.
Bortoleto, Lawson, and Colapinto are all out.
Lap 14
15:32Replays show Leclerc taking the esses at Maggots and Becketts in a straight line, and he tells the pit wall that he was distracted by water coming in through his visor!
Tells you all you need to know about the conditions here as the rain begins to ease.
Lap 14 - Safety car deployed
15:30 , Arthur FerridgeThe falling rain meant the race was getting a little too interesting, and the FIA deploy the safety car.
It is the right decision to be fair to the race directors. The conditions are far from ideal.
Lap 13
15:29 , Arthur FerridgeThere are some quite significant puddles on the track here - massive rooster tails of spray coming out from behind the cars down the back straight.
Hamilton looks to be struggling, and tells his team he needs the blue-walled full wet tire!
Lap 13
15:28 , Arthur FerridgeTen minutes of rain expected, according to the McLaren pit wall.
Lap 12
15:27 , Arthur FerridgeAlbon takes advantage of those pitting ahead of him and finds himself up into second place!
Only briefly, though, as Piastri gets by in short order. So too does Norris.
Lap 12
15:26 , Arthur FerridgeIt was a slow stop for Norris as McLaren struggled with the double-stack stop. Verstappen goes back ahead!
Lap 11
15:25 , Arthur FerridgeVerstappen runs well wide at chapel corner and through goes Norris!
Meanwhile, Piastri pits. Norris is called in immediately after, while Verstappen follows him in for fresh inters.
Lap 11
15:24 , Arthur FerridgeThe final sector is continuing to prove the most difficult for the drivers. Verstappen says he will have to pit for new intermediate tires if rain intensifies.
Norris is fast closing in behind him as the rain seems to be doing exactly what Verstappen hoped it wouldn’t.
The Dutchman is really struggling here.
Lap 10
15:23Its all happening at Silverstone!
Antonelli pits for intermediate tires.
Piastri has opened a four-second lead at the front.
Lap 9
15:21 , Arthur FerridgeLeclerc and Antonelli are duelling now - The Monegasque goes through ahead of the Hamilton straight before immediately surrendering his advantage.
Lap 9 - RAIN IS FALLING
15:20 , Arthur FerridgeThe rain is back at Silverstone....
Lap 8
15:20 , Arthur FerridgePiastri is all over Verstappen here!
They are neck and neck through Maggots and Becketts, before the Aussie gets by under assistance from the DRS on the back straight.
Lap 7
15:18 , Arthur FerridgeThe VSC ends and Piastri immediately sets about hunting down Verstappen.
Lap 7
15:17 , Arthur FerridgeLance Stroll makes the dubious decision to pit for soft tires.
His Aston Martin teammate Alonso was just told that rain would hit in six laps time, before heavy rain falls four laps after that.
A roll of the dice from the Canadian.
Lap 6
15:16Piastri is looming large in Verstappen’s wing mirrors under the VSC.
VIRTUAL SAFETY CAR
15:13More yellow flags - Bortoleto is told to retire and he cannot make it back to the pits.
Up the road, Piastri is chasing Verstappen for the lead of the race, and the Dutchman looks to be in trouble. The deficit stands at seven tenths and is fast falling.
He is spared, however, by another VSC.
Lap 5
15:13 , Arthur FerridgeThat should be that for Bortoleto - there are large chunks of carbon fibre dropping off the rear of his Kick Sauber car.
Lap 4
15:12 , Arthur FerridgeThe free racing was short lived - yellow flags fly with Bortoleto in the barriers, but he has got going again.
Lap 4
15:11 , Arthur FerridgeThe VSC has ended - let’s go racing!
Rain expected in 10 laps’ time, says the Ferrari garage.
Lap 3
15:09 , Arthur FerridgeAh, upon viewing the replay that looks to have been quite heavy contact between Lawson and Ocon.
A genuine racing incident - Lawson pulled across the Frenchman’s path and was sent spinning out.
Colapinto has also retired after stalling in the pit lane. A rookie error.
Hadjar and Bortoleto have pitted for dry tires.
VIRTUAL SAFETY CAR
15:07The VSC is deployed!
Liam Lawson does not look able to continue after his lap one incident and has pulled over.
We could see a lot of the field head into the pits here.
Lap 1
15:05 , Arthur FerridgeVerstappen leads into turn one from pole.
Looks to have been a tiny bit of contact between Hamilton and Norris there, but the leaders have stayed in order from the off.
In the backfield, Liam Lawson looks to have left the track.
Esteban Ocon reports damage - he might have hit Lawson?
Norris and Hamilton go toe to toe towards the end of the lap, but the McLaren driver keeps the eight-time world champion behind.
RACE START
15:04Lights out and away they go!
Tyre drama
15:04Charles Leclerc and George Russell pit for slick tires ahead of the race start! They will fall to the back of the field, but will the pace advantage benefit them?
Oscar Piastri reports the last sector is too damp for slicks.
Formation lap
15:01 , Arthur FerridgeThe formation lap is underway.
After the safety car pulls away, Verstappen pulls off and looks rather squirrelly as he hits a burnout to get some heat into the tires.
The track looks bone dry. Could we see some drivers pit for slicks before the start here?
Weather update
15:00 , Arthur FerridgeNews from the Aston Martin garage implies that rain is expected around lap 15, meaning it’ll hit in about a half hour.
In a worrying premonition, the formation lap will be held under guidance of the safety car despite the blue skies over Silverstone. Hopefully, that is purely out of an abundance of caution.
All drivers will start on intermediate tires.
Franco Colapinto to start from the pit lane
14:59 , Arthur FerridgeA reminder that the Argentine will not take to the grid this afternoon after taking on a new power unit ahead of race start.
What of the home contenders? Lewis Hamilton starts fifth, with Lando Norris and George Russell sharing the second row ahead of him.
George Russell on the conditions
14:49 , Arthur FerridgeGeorge Russell tells Sky Sports he expects the track to dry out fairly quickly.
Will that be the case? All remains to be seen.
Time for the anthems
14:46 , Arthur FerridgeRace start is not far away now.
Singer-songwriter Becky Hill is out on track to sing ‘God Save the King’, after which the teams and drivers will make their final preparations ahead of the formation lap.
Heavy rain falling again at Silverstone
14:26The rain had looked to be initially easing off at Silverstone, but it’s just started coming down heavily once again with more wind to boot.
Some uncertain moments for the drivers as they complete a number of warm-up laps and try to get to grips with these tricky conditions, with spray kicking up everywhere off the sodden and cold track and making visibility very difficult.
Lando Norris tells race engineer Will Joseph that the track is slippery.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown, meanwhile, says he is expecting an “epic race” down on the pit wall.
Haas confirm the rain is expected to get a lot heavier in the next five minutes.
Just over half an hour until lights out!
Will we see intermediate tyres across the board here to start, or the full wets?

'Simply lovely': Verstappen reacts to surprise Silverstone pole
14:14 , George FloodIt was certainly an unexpected pole for Max Verstappen yesterday, coming after he had sat fourth in the early going in Q3.
However, despite his unhappiness at times, he was eventually able to utilise the RB21’s obvious strengths around the high-speed corners at Silverstone.
"Simply lovely,” Verstappen said after his blistering final lap pipped Oscar Piastri by 0.103 seconds.
“That final lap was good enough. This is a proper track in qualifying where you have to go flat out.
"It is a big boost for the team as well and excited to go racing tomorrow.
“We are going to go racing, we will do the best we can.”

Famous faces at Silverstone
14:02Plenty of celebrities are braving the rain at Silverstone this afternoon for one of the signature races on the F1 calendar...

Alpine's Colapinto struggles again amid Bottas rumours
13:47 , George FloodOllie Bearman wasn’t the only driver to crash in an eventful qualifying session at Silverstone yesterday.
Franco Colapinto’s struggles at Alpine continued in Q1 as he hit the kerb, went through the gravel and bumped the wall.
Proceedings were red-flagged for 10 minutes as necessary repairs were made to the barrier.
Former Williams driver Colapinto is last on the grid in what is the final instalment of that initial five-race deal to replace Australian rookie Jack Doohan following the Miami Grand Prix in May.
The Argentine has said that he is not concerned by reports that he could potentially be replaced by Valtteri Bottas for the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa later this month.

Oliver Bearman hit with 10-place grid penalty
13:31 , George FloodOliver Bearman performed excellently for Haas yesterday to get to Q3 and qualify in eighth for his home race at Silverstone, but will start 18th this afternoon after being handed a 10-place grid penalty.
The British driver was also slapped with four more penalty points on his super license - taking him up to eight in total - after crashing on entry into the pitlane under red flag conditions.
Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli also dropped from seventh to 10th as the result of a three-place grid penalty that was handed down due to his error that took both himself and Max Verstappen out of the Austrian Grand Prix at Turn 3 of the very first lap at the Red Bull Ring last weekend.
He was found to be fully at fault for the incident having taken evasive action after locking the rear wheels on his W16.
Jak Crawford wins feature Formula 2 race
13:16Spain’s Mari Boya did eventually win that rain-delayed Formula 3 race for Campos earlier today.
Meanwhile, Aston Martin’s American academy star Jak Crawford won the feature Formula 2 race for DAMS to close the gap on MP Motorsport’s Richard Verschoor in the title race.
McLaren junior driver Alex Dunne of Ireland - who made his F1 debut recently in practice at the Austrian Grand Prix - was second for Rodin Motorsport, while Briton Luke Browning of Williams took third in his home race for Hitech TGR.

Weather forecast after heavy rain at Silverstone
13:04 , George FloodIt has been absolutely tipping it down at Silverstone so far today, causing chaos in the earlier F3 race that saw crashes and aquaplaning galore before the red flags were eventually waved.
It was initially forecast for light rain this morning, but it’s actually been torrential, leaving standing water all over the place and a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in the area issued by the Met Office.
It looks like it will continue raining early this afternoon, with a 30 per cent chance of still coming down when the race begins at 3pm.
The temperature should stick at around 19 degrees.

Starting grid
