A British sixth form student has died on a school trip to New York after "falling ill," police believe.

The 17-year-old girl was found unconscious and unresponsive at a Holiday Inn Express hotel where the touring party had been staying on December 19.

The teenager, from Bristol Grammar School, was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

It is understood there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death but police said that the girl may have fallen ill during the trip.

New York police are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination.

Bristol Grammar School said in a statement: "We are all devastated by the news and our thoughts are with their family and friends during this extremely difficult time.

“Our pupils, their parents and our staff have been informed and we are providing support to all those who have been affected by this news.

"We have opened a book of condolence and we will consider further remembrance with the family’s support in the New Year."

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are talking with the US authorities and are providing support to the family."
