British Gas owner Centrica to axe 700 jobs amid 'growing challenges'

British Gas owner Centrica is planning to cut around 700 management and back office jobs.

The cuts will come under previously announced reductions as the company faces "growing challenges".

Centrica said staff had been told about the cuts, which were part of its "ongoing transformation".

Last month Centrica shareholders faced pressure over the company's group chief executive's pay-rise.

It emerged Iain Conn's pay-packet bump saw him earning 109 times more than the average British Gas call centre employee.

Industry union Unison called for action over the £2.4million Mr Conn raked in last year, saying his package was 109 times more than the £22,000 an average British Gas call centre worker earns.

Centrica said under Mr Conn the company had made progress to “entirely reshape the group”.

Responding to today's job cut announcement, the GMB union criticised the company's move, saying it was part of a wider plan to cut 4,000 jobs in the customer side of the business by 2020.

Justin Bowden, GMB National Secretary, said: “Centrica’s still-falling share price tells you everything you need to know about the state of the company and how it has been run over the past few years.

“British Gas cannot just cut its way out of a crisis, largely of its own making, simply by slashing jobs and trying to offshore.

“There has to be investment, innovation and a proper plan and vision for the future that reverses customer losses, produces growth and puts right some deep-seated cultural issues.”
