British football betting tops £12billion for the first time

More than £12bn was bet on football in Great Britain last year, with the majority of bets being made online.

British-based punters placed £10.99bn worth of football bets online between April 2018 and March 2019, according to the latest industry statistics from the Gambling Commission.

In-store bets amounted to £1.57bn, giving bookies a total betting turnover of £12.56bn - the amount earned before winnings or expenses are deducted.

That’s an increase of £886 million from the previous 12 months and is almost double the £7.19bn punters bet on football between April 2015 and March 2016.

The huge increase has been driven by the growth in online gambling.

In-store bets have gone up from £1.30bn in 2015/16 to £1.57bn in 2017/18.

Online bets made in Great Britain, meanwhile, have gone from £5.89bn to £10.99bn over the same time period.
