British F35 fighter jet crashes during routine flying operation in Mediterranean with pilot ejecting

A British fighter jet has crashed into the Mediterranean sea during a routine flying operation.

The pilot of the F35 fighter jet ejected safely before the crash, which is believed to have happened at around 10am GMT, and was rescued before being brought back on board the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth.

The incident is believed to have happened during flying operations in international waters while the carrier was sailing in the Mediterranean, with no other aircraft involved.

An investigation into the crash has now begun, with the cause currently unknown.

A tweet from the Ministry of Defence Press Office read: "A British F35 pilot from HMS Queen Elizabeth ejected during routine flying operations in the Mediterranean this morning."

"The pilot has been safely returned to the ship and an investigation has begun, so it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time."

F35 jets, like the one which crashed, cost around £100m million each.
