British expats flying to Dublin Airport and staying in Irish Airbnbs to avoid COVID travel restrictions in Asia

British nationals are using short stays in Dublin to avoid travel bans in Far East Countries.

These countries have banned direct travel from the United Kingdom, but expat British nationals are renting properties in Dublin for short stays, ranging from 14 to 21 days, before travelling to southeast Asian countries.

Travellers who have been in the UK 14 days before they’re due to travel to countries like Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Singpore are not permitted to enter.

But British nationals have been avoiding these strict travel restrictions and they are using Ireland as a temporary stopover by renting properties in Dublin.

The expats are “killing time” by renting Airbnbs in Dublin, with Ireland being a popular transit location because the Government has not yet fully implemented mandatory quarantine.

“Ireland is an easy option for (British) expat escapees: cheap flights, lax quarantine implementation and doable expat routes to Asia like Doha that don’t require quarantine if transiting only," a source told the Irish Times.

As long as passengers can declare to the authorities that they have been in Ireland for 14 days prior to flying, they can escape the travel ban policy that they're trying to avoid.

“It seems like a hell of a layover in Ireland, but most have no choice; long-term stay visas or permanent residency visa holders can lapse if the holder is out of the country too long.

“This is another reason to swallow the time and expense involved in hiking to Ireland for a couple of weeks.”
