Eurovision may have been cancelled for 2020, but thankfully, we’ve still been able to get into the celebratory spirit thanks to Netflix’s film which celebrates the very best of the Song Contest.
Starring Eurovision mega-fan Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of the Fire Saga follows Icelandic singers Lars Erickssong and Sigrit Ericksdóttir (Ferrell and Rachel McAdams) as they are given the chance to represent their country at the prestigious event.
Settling down to watch Netflix’s latest offering in a Gogglebox-style special, former Eurovision contestants Blue, Conchita Wurst, Courtney Act, The Fizz (formerly Bucks Fizz), Scooch and Joe and Jake all had their say on the film and reminisced about their experiences with the contest.
The Story of the Fire Saga brought back a lot of memories for the boys in Blue, who competed in Eurovision in 2011 with their song I Can, placing a respectable 11th on the scoreboard.
“I remember them saying don’t get p****d, don’t get p****d and I’m like 'I really want to get p****d,’” Lee Ryan told his bandmates when watching one particular party scene.
Questioning why they weren’t invited to take part in the film like some other contestants, Simon Webbe quipped: “Because we got beat by Jedward."
Elsewhere Courtney Act asked 2014 Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst whether there was any “hanky panky” when she took part in the song contest. Wurst bashfully replied: “I mean, you know, make-up artists, and...”
Meanwhile, UK’s 2016 entry Jake and Joe, made up of friends Joe Woolford and Jake Shakeshaft, joked about how they increased their stage presence.
“Jake, your suitcase was full of rolled up football socks!” Joe sniggered. “And I always wondered why. Now it makes sense!”
