A British woman has died off the coast of South Africa after the yacht she was travelling in was hit by a severe storm.

Eco researcher Sara King, 34, is believed to have become trapped in the catamaran off the east coast on Monday morning.

Ms King's partner James Elsworth, 33, and his friend Jason Baker, 31, were saved along with their terrier-cross called Dax.

The Sun quotes a source close to the investigation as saying: "It's the most awful tragedy that's ended the life of a young woman who loved the world and had everything to live for.

"Sara was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Everyone who knew her will be beside themselves."

South Africa's National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said a carrier was called to assist a boat taking on water 242 nautical miles off the east coast. It said rescuers tried to save the life of Ms King on board but she was pronounced dead.

Mr Elsworth and Mr Baker, from Durban and Cape Town, were uninjured and taken to Durban sea rescue station with Dax.

"Sincere condolences are conveyed to family and friends of the deceased", a spokesman for the NSRI said.

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "Our staff are supporting the family of a British woman following her death whilst sailing off the coast of South Africa and are in contact with the South African authorities."

Ms King was the co-founder of Evolve Abroad, which provides trips abroad offering training in skills from marine biology to conflict resolution.

The 34-year-old, who was on a trip researching ocean plastic, had been posting updates from her Instagram account.

In her last video post, she said: "Winds up — sails out. The highs and lows can make you scream — wild coast: you magnificent beast.”
