British diplomats told to call UK one country instead of a union of four nations

British diplomats will be told to call the UK one country rather than "four nations of the UK" under new plans to strengthen the union, reports claim.

Details of plans to strengthen links between Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland have emerged in the Sunday Times following a meeting with the devolved leaders on Thursday.

Part of the plans discussed that have since come to light include asking British diplomats to change the way they speak about the UK, referring to it as "one country rather than talking about the four nations of the UK", the paper reports.

The paper also claims that Whitehall officials will be told to "stop ignoring the Union and put its preservation at the heart of policymaking" as well as plans to invest more money in transport links between the four countries.

Plans for a university student exchange scheme within the UK were also discussed.

The revelations were made along side plans for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to spend more time in Scotland.

A YouGov poll in Scotland found that more people favour Prince William, with 69% of voters holding a positive view of him, over just 22% of Scots with a favourable view of Boris Johnson.

A source close to the royal household revealed: "They think of it as their Union," adding: "It was originally a union of crowns. They think the politicians have been losing Scotland for them. What William is doing is deliberately more muscular approach to the crown investing in the relationship with Scotand."

According to the paper, there are plans for William and Kate to make Balmoral, the Queen's Scottish estate, more of a second home, and for them to strengthen their ties with St Andrews, where the couple went to university together and met.

"They want them not to look like visitors but to look like residents."

Buckingham Palace declined to comment.
